The Art Of Patina
The patina determines the appearance of a leather product in terms of the visual texture type and colors used in it. In fact, based on the skill level of the finisher, the upper of any shoes changes in to a work of art. This method is specially used in customized products of top manufacturers of leather shoes in Italy and France like: Berluti, Santoni, Corthay & Bontoni.
In this technique, different layers of colors are painted on leather for the final desirable effect. At the begining of the process, the color- blending operation may start with one or two based colors. But it would reach to ۷, ۸ or more colors based on what the Patina Artist expects from the product. It is obvious that variety of colors and visual textures determines the diversity of tools used at the time of patina. While coloring and polishing a pair of shoes, different parts such as toecap, punch areas and back part come to the attention of a finisher in terms of color selection and measure of shiny. By applying types of contrasts, the final effect of product will be strengthen. Each shoe has its own story and unlike the mass production, in this method the visual quality of the final product is based on the customer’s order with the aim of personalizing the product.
